The Tamid, Or Daily Offering In addition to the daily songs, that was song in the temple. Plus, where is Moses? Text Ex 29:38 - 46 This week’s torah portion, {Ex 27:20 - 30:10} covers a wide number of topics. From the pure olive oil, that fueled the lamps in the Tabernacle, and later within the first and second temples. {Ex 27:20 - 21} To the wardrobe, the High Priest worn. {Ex 28:1 - 14} Though, when I read this week’s portion. What reached out and caught my attention, were the daily offerings that were offered up on the alter, within the Tabernacle that later became the prodical in the temple. In turn I felt compelled to examine the daily offerings, in order to educate myself even further on this prodical that the Lord implemented. Though, before we examine the daily offerings, let me briefly comint on the alter in the temple, which the daily offerings were offered up on. The alter: David erected an altar on a threshing floor of natural stone that he bought from Araunah the Jebusite. {2 Sam 24:15 - 25 } I mention this fact, because the altar built by King Solomon, was erected on the very same place. That said, Solomon enlarge the alter to the dimension of "twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide and ten cubits high." {2 Chron 4:1} Why was this location chosen? According to the sages, man was created on th very spot, in which the alter stood. Later, it was at this spot on Mount Moriah that Abraham bound Isaac upon the altar that he had built. Moving on the following Hebrew word for continuous is "tamiyd." I alluded to this fact because the Lord said, "this is what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs of the first year, day by day continually. One lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight." Ex 29:38-39 With that said, this week’s torah portion is entitled "tetzavah," which means "you shall command," I alluded to this fact, because the Lord commanded that two one year old lambs, without a spot or a blemish, {Num 28:3 } be sacrifice as a bunt offering, to the Lord. The first lamb, as a mourning offering, the second lamb in the evening, at 3 P.M. In turn the mourning and evening offerings, encased the personal offerings that were offered up, throughout the day. To offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the Law of the LORD which He commanded Israel. 1 Chron 16:40 In light of this I find it interesting, the temple had a choir made up of Levi priests, who served in the temple. Why do I find this fact interesting? Simply because while the mourning and evening sacrifices, were being laid on the alter. The choir song a different song each day of the week, for example. With today being Monday, if we were in the temple today. While the mourning and evening sacrifice, were being placed on the alter. We would hear the temple choir singing Ps 48, which begins with "great is the Lord, and highly to be praised in the city of our G-d, in the mountain of His holiness." Why Ps 48? Simply because it was on the second day of the week that the Lord divided the waters. (Gen. 1:6-7) In turn the rabbis explain that this psalm was chosen for this day, because G-d departmentalized His creation and reigned over it. Normally it take me a week, to complete a lesson. Thus, on each day this week, I will inform you of the Psalms the choir song, while the daily sacrifice were being laid on the alter. Moving on the Lord went on to say, "the one lamb shall be one-tenth of an ephah of flour mixed with one-fourth of a hin of pressed oil, and one-fourth of a hin of wine as a drink offering. The other lamb you shall offer at twilight; and you shall offer with it the grain offering and the drink offering, as in the morning, for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD." E x 29:40 - 41 An ephah was a dry measure of about one bushel capacity. I alluded to this fact, because before slaughtering the mourning and evening sacrifice, and placing it on the alter. The Lord instructed, one - tenth of a bushel, of flour mixed with eighteen eggs and pressed olive oil be poured onto the caucus, before placing it on the alter. What was the purpose, you ask? Well, before I answer this question, with today being Tuesday, the third day of the week. If we were in the temple, while the mourning and evening sacrifice, were being offer up. Base on the fact that today, is the third day of the week. We would hear the temple choir singing Ps. 82. Why this Psalm 82? Simply because Ps. 82 begins by saying, "G-d stands in the congregation of G-d; He judges among the judges." In light of this, it was on the third day {Tuesday} that the Almighty created the land. {Gen 1:10 } Upon this land, the judges stand to render their decisions. Thus the sages state, "G-d caused the land to be revealed through His wisdom, thus preparing the world for His judgement." Returning to our question, what was the purpose of pasting the sacrifice with flour, eggs and pressed olive oil? Well this mixture conveyed a sweet smelling aroma into the air, while the lamb was being bunt as an offering. This is significant, because Paul in the following verse associated Yeshua’s death, to "a sweet smelling aroma." Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. Eph 5:2 According to the sages, miracles were of common occurrence in and around the temple, which was built after the pattern of the Tabernacle. That said, the temple you might say, was a slaughterhouse, due to the number of sacrifices, offered up on a given day. Though in spite of this fact, incredibly not a single fly was ever seen in the temple. Neither did the rain ever extinguished the fire, on the alter. Returning to the text, the Lord then continued on by saying, "this shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD, where I will meet you to speak with you." Ex 29:42 "This shall be a continual burnt offering." Try as man might, there’s not a day that go by, when man doesn’t sin. In turn the lambs {daily offerings} that were offered up as a sacrifice, was design to be offered up continually, in order to atone for man’s sins daily. {Lev 1:4 } Also it is impossible for a Holy G-d, to commune with sinful man. However the daily offering made it possible for the Lord to come within people’s presents and commune with them, because their sins were atone for daily. In keeping with my promise that I would inform you of the daily song that was song in the temple. With today being Wednesday, the fourth day of the week. The temple choir song Ps 94, which begins by saying "O L-rd G-d, to whom vengeance belongs; O G-d, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth!" Why? It was on the fourth day of the week, that the Lord spoke the sun, moon and stars into existence. {Gen 1:14 - 15 } In turn explaining why Ps 94 was song. That said, in the future the Lord will exercise judgement and exact vengeance on those individuals, who worship these heavenly bodies, as pagan gods. It should be pointed out, before the mourning sacrifice was bound and offered up, to ensure that the mourning sacrifice, was offered up at the correct time. {at dawn} The entire eastern sky had to be lit up first, before the mourning sacrifice was bound and offered up. Once it has been established that the proper time has come for offering up the tamid or daily sacrifice, the gates of the Sanctuary were open. Then the overseer instructed the priests, who will be sacrificing the lamb, "to bring a lamb from the Chamber of Lambs!" The Chamber of Lambs was a room in the temple in which lambs were kept; a minimum of six lambs were previously checked and certified as blemish-free, and were kept here for the daily sacrifices. It was required that each lamb be checked 4 days in advance, of being sacrificed. Although the lamb, which had been selected for the tamid offering that day, had already been distinguished as being free of any blemish. Nonetheless as an added precaution, since the Lord strongly prohibited the offering of blemished animals. The lamb was rechecked once again by torchlight, after its removal from the chamber. This is to preclude the unlikely event that perhaps something has befallen the lamb since it was last examined, which would render it unfit. Once the lamb {tamid} daily sacrifice is slaughtered, six priests bring various parts of the sacrifice, up the altar ramp. The seventh priest brings the fine flour for the meal offering which accompanies the daily sacrifice. This day in biblical history: Remember Moses pleaded with the Lord to allow him, to lead the people into the land. However the Lord wouldn’t allow him, to enter in. {Deut. 3:23 - 24 } Though the Lord allowed Moses to go up to the top of mount Nebo, in order to view the land. {Deut 34:1 } Then upon viewing the land, Moses passed away. I briefly recounted this event, because today {Wednesday} is the seventh of Adar, on the Hebrew calender and, according to rabbinical teaching, today is the anniversary of Moses' death. Moving on the Almighty went on to say, "there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by My glory." { Ex 29:43} That said, not anyone can walk into the oval office, for a meeting with President Bush. Although the King of the universe stated, He would meet with the children of Israel in the tabernacle. With that said, the following Hebrew word for sanctified "qadash," imply "to proclaim as being holy." I mention this fact, because the tabernacle was made holy, simply by the Lord’s presents. {Ps 28:2} That said, remember how the glory of G-d came down on Mount Sinai, in a cloud . {Ex 25:16} Well in lack manner the glory of G-d came down on the tabernacle, in a cloud also. Thus I’m remindful, when Yeshua took Peter, James and John into the mountain of transfiguration. Suddenly out of the blue, Moses and Elijah appeared and were talking to Yeshua. {Matt 17:3 } How does this event relate to our lesson? Well, there is a rabbinical teaching that states, "as it were with the fathers so, shall it be with the sons." I alluded to this biblical fact, because when Peter witnessed Moses and Elijah transfigured before his eyes. He stated, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Though, while Peter was still talking, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud , saying, "this is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!" {Matt 17:4 - 5 } What can we gleam from? Well the Lord throughout time, has appeared to men in a cloud. Therefore the Lord will appear to men in this fashion again in the future, for example. John writes, "I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud . And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire." Rev 10:1 That said, there has been munch speculation, concerning this angel’s identity. Thou, if you have a working knowledge, of the scriptures. Then you know, throughout the scriptures that the Lord has appeared to men, in the form of a cloud. In turn the identity of this angel, is non other than Yeshua, coming to seek vengeance on sinful man. With today being Thursday, the fifth day of the week. If we were in the temple’s court today, we would hear the temple choir singing Ps 84, which begins by saying. "Sing aloud to G-d our strength: make a joyful noise to the G-d of Jacob." Why Ps 84? It was on the fifth day of the week, that the Lord created all living creatures on earth. {Gen 1:24 } Thus, whenever a person witness these living creatures, he should think of his’ Creator, and give Him praise. A thought: Bearing in mind that the first and second temple, were pattern after the tabernacle. The temple was likewise deemed as holy, by the mire present of G-d. {Ps 65:4} That said, as glorious as the first and second temple were, the coming temple will more grander. {Haggai 2:7 - 9 } All because the present of the Lord, will dwell in it and make it holy. Returning to the text the Lord said, "I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar; I will also consecrate Aaron and his sons to minister as priests to Me." {Ex 29:44} With that said, the following Hebrew word for consecrate "qadash" imply "to proclaim holy." I mention this fact, because the daily sacrifices, made the tabernacle and the alter holy, making Aaron and his sons holy to preform their priestly duties. According to the sages, the Lord intended to dwell within the hearts of the people. Though when the people rebelled, by building a golden calf. The Almighty concluded, the hearts of men, were to wicked, to dwell in. In turn the Lord issued, the commandment for the tabernacle to be built. It is against this background then that the Lord stated, "I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God." {Ex 29:45} Briefly the mourning and evening sacrifices, sanctified the people, making it possible for the Almighty to come within their midst, and commune with them. That said, "G-d’s word declare the end, from the beginning,"{Isa 46:10 } for example. After John witnessed the heaven and the earth, passed away. John then witnessed the new heaven and earth, along with new Jerusalem, come down from heaven. Then he heard, a loud voice from heaven saying, "behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God." {Rev 21:1 - 3 } So in the future then, a tabernacle fashion after the earthly tabernacle will come down from heaven, in order for the Lord to dwell in the people’s midst. Returning to the text the Lord then said, "they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them. I am the LORD their God." { Ex 29:46} Briefly if the people obeyed the Lord’s commandment in building the tabernacle. The Lord promised in return, He would be their G-d and dwell among them. That said, the Greek word for manifest "emphanizo" means "to appear." Where am I going with this, you ask? Well Yeshua said, "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." {John 14:21 } So if we keep the Lord’s commandments, the Lord will manifest Himself to us. On the sixth day of the week, {Friday} the choir sang Ps 93, which begins with "the Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty." Why Ps 93? Well, the Lord completed creation on the sixth day. {Gen 1:31 } And on the sixth day, man was created, and of all G-d’s creations. That said, only man can recognize G-d's true greatness and majesty. Where is Moses? This week’s torah portion is unique, in that Moses’ name doesn’t appear in it. Why is this? During the forty days, when Moses was specking to G-d, on Mount Sinai. The people assumed that Moses had died, and wasn’t returning. In turn Aaron at the bequest of the people, molded the golden calf. The Lord became furious and threaten to destroy the Israelites, blotting their name out from under heaven. Ex 32:10 However Moses intervened for the people saying, "please forgive their sin — but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written." Ex 32:32 So, when the Lord threaten to destroy the Israelites, by blotting their name out from under heaven. Moses interceded for the people by saying, please forgive them of their sin, but if You can’t. Then instead of blotting their names out, blot my name out. With that said, the Israelites kept a book of record, listing the 12 tribes in it. Under each tribes were a list of families of each tribe, then a list of names of was listed. Though, when an individual passed away, their name was blotted out. In turn many have concluded, what Moses was saying here. Lord if You can’t forgive the people, blot my name out, by taking my life, before Your wrath falls on the people. So, returning to our question why, then doesn’t Moses’ name, appear in this week’s torah portion? The sages states that G-d overlooked Moses offer, of blotting out his name, by taking his life. Thou in honor of Moses request, Moses’ name doesn’t appear {blotted out} in week’s torah portion. I find the sages teaching interesting, because the Lord has His’ own book. That book being "the book of life," and within it are found name of individuals, who have overcame this world, by "the blood of the Lamb." {Rev 7:14 } In turn their names, aren’t blotted out. Rev 3:5 Though, for those who have rejected "the Lamb of G-d," liken to Moses in this week’s torah portion. Their names are blotted out, in turn they are cast into the lake of fire, where they will burn for an eternity. Rev 20:15 In closing, I purposely omitted one procedure, or prodical that was followed, before the tamid, or daily offering was sacrifice, on the alter. The reason being I wanted to close with it, along with a thought. After the lamb had been selected. The next prodical call, called for the lamb to be given a drink of water, because the water made the lamb’s skin easier to remove. The lamb was watered from a golden vessel; everything done in the Temple was always conducted with as much honor as possible. Upon learning of this procedure, I found it significant that the lamb, was given a drink of water, before being bound and offered up as a sacrifice. Why? Well, before bounding Yeshua to the Cross, a Roman solder gave Yeshua sour wine {vinegar} mingle with gall, to drink. Though upon tasting it, Yeshua refused to drink of it further.{John 27:34 } In turn the prodical call that called for the sacrificial lamb to be given a drink of water. Prior to being bound on the alter, is a thematic theme or picture of "the Lamb of G-d," being given vinegar to drink, before being bound to the Cross, for our sins. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, 'This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: May the LORD bless you and keep you. May the LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you. May the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace."
